BECE Edo Syllabus 2026/2027 & Textbooks

The BECE Edo Syllabus 2026 (covering Nigerian languages, including Edo) for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (Junior WAEC) follows the National Examinations Council (NECO) curriculum. It focuses on assessing JSS3 students in 17 subjects, including Edo language, Mathematics, English, Basic Science, and Cultural & Creative Arts, to qualify them for senior secondary school.

Aims & Objectives

The BECE (Basic Education Certificate Examination) in Edo State, aligned with national NECO guidelines and the 9-year basic education curriculum, aims to assess students’ mastery of subjects, facilitate transition to senior secondary school, and evaluate knowledge application. Key objectives include fostering cognitive, practical, and affective skills across subjects like basic science, technology, and business studies to meet modern societal needs.

Marking Guide

The BECE Edo examination consists of two papers—Paper 1 and Paper 2. Each paper contains 60 multiple-choice questions and lasts one hour, making a total examination time of two hours.

Paper 1:
Sixty questions made up of two comprehension passages (5 questions each), composition (5), grammar (25), sound system/phonology (10), orthography (5), and translation (5).

Paper 2:
Sixty questions drawn from oral literature (15), prose I (5), prose II (5), drama I (5), drama II (5), poetry (5), and culture and tradition (20).
