NECO Yoruba Language Syllabus 2026/2027 & Textbooks
The NECO Yoruba Language Syllabus (SSCE) covers three main areas: Language, literature, and culture, designed to test proficiency in oral and written skills. It includes comprehension, essay writing, sound systems (phonology), grammar (morphology/syntax), translation, oral/written literature, and cultural and traditional practices.
The NECO Yoruba Language Syllabus is carefully structured to help students develop a strong command of the Yoruba language while also appreciating its rich cultural and literary heritage. It aims to go beyond basic language learning by ensuring that candidates can use Yoruba confidently and accurately in both spoken and written forms. Through this approach, learners are prepared to communicate effectively and express ideas clearly in real-life and academic contexts.
A major focus of the syllabus is building a solid understanding of the linguistic components of Yoruba. Students are introduced to the sound system, grammar, and sentence structures that form the foundation of the language. In addition, the syllabus exposes candidates to both oral and written Yoruba literature—such as poetry, prose, and drama—encouraging critical thinking, interpretation, and deeper appreciation of literary works.
The syllabus also emphasizes the preservation and promotion of Yoruba culture and values. It deepens students’ knowledge of traditions, customs, and social institutions like marriage, chieftaincy, and moral ethics. Furthermore, it supports the use of modern Yoruba orthography, vocabulary development, and practical skills in translation and composition (Àrokò), ensuring that learners can apply the language effectively in contemporary settings.
