Introduction to Commerce: Meaning, scope, functions, and branches of commerce.

Production: Types (primary, secondary, and tertiary), factors of production, and industrialization.

Trade: Home trade (retail, wholesale) and foreign trade (import, export, entrepot).

Business Units: Forms of ownership, including sole proprietorships, partnerships, joint-stock companies, and public enterprises.

Banking and Finance: Roles of commercial banks, central banks, and specialized financial institutions.

Marketing & Consumer Behavior: Elements of marketing, sales, advertising, and consumer behavior analysis.

Insurance & Risk Management: Types of insurance policies and their relevance to business.

Transportation & Communication: Methods of transportation (sea, land, air, pipeline) and communication channels.

Business Environment: Legal and social environment, including consumer protection and business ethics. 

Aims & Objective

The NABTEB Commerce syllabus aims to equip candidates with fundamental knowledge of commercial activities, enabling them to understand the mechanisms of trade, production, and business operations within the economy. key objectives include understanding the role of trade aids (banking, insurance, and transportation), identifying business structures, and analyzing the impact of changing commercial environments.

  • (a) Purpose and scope of commerce and its situation in the general environment in which commercial activities are performed. 
  • (b) The organization and operation of the various types of businesses. 
  • (c) Trade and the various commercial services.

The examination consists of one paper divided into two sections, lasting 3 hours 20 minutes.

  • Section A: 50 multiple-choice questions, 50 minutes, worth 25% of the total marks.
  • Section B: 10 essay questions; candidates answer 52 hours 30 minutes, worth 75% of the total marks.
