NECO’s 2026 registration cycle typically begins well before the examination period and spans several months. For the SSCE Internal examination (for school-based candidates), the official registration window opened early and runs through June 2026, with a late registration period extending just before the final deadline.

During this period, school authorities must complete all steps including payment of fees, biometric data capture, and online upload of candidate entries so that each candidate receives a valid NECO registration number. Candidates and schools must adhere strictly to these timelines because the council will close the registration portal at the end of the period and will not accept entries after the deadline, even with payment. Late registration is permitted within the specified window but attracts an additional fee per candidate.

For SSCE External (GCE) candidates, NECO usually opens registration later in the year, around mid-year, with deadlines in the last quarter. Private candidates need to register individually online, create an account on the NECO portal using a valid email address and phone number, and complete payment before visiting an approved registration centre to submit their biodata and biometric details.
