The NECO Geography exam requires candidates to answer questions from physical, human, and regional geography, and map reading. To prepare effectively, focus heavily on recurring themes: map interpretation, physical geomorphology, natural resource utilization across Africa, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

NECO Geography Areas Of Concentration 2026/2027

1. Practical and Elementary Surveying (Map Work)

Map Work is one of the most important and usually compulsory sections in the NECO Geography examination. Students are expected to develop practical skills in reading, interpreting, and analyzing maps. Key areas include map reading and interpretation, where candidates identify physical features such as valleys, spurs, ridges, and knolls, as well as cultural features like settlements, roads, railways, dams, and bridges on topographical maps.

Students should also master map calculations, including the use of map scales, measuring distances, calculating gradients, determining bearings, and finding directions. Other important map techniques include map reduction and enlargement, drawing cross profiles, and determining inter-visibility between points. In addition, candidates should understand various methods of data representation, including the construction and interpretation of bar charts, line graphs, flow charts, pie charts, and dot maps.

2. Physical Geography

Physical Geography focuses on the natural environment and the processes that shape the Earth’s surface. Students are expected to study the Earth and the hydrosphere, including the Earth’s movements (rotation and revolution) and their effects, longitude and time calculations, ocean basins, ocean currents, salinity, and tides.

Another major area is landforms and tectonic processes. This includes the study of plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanic activities, and different forms of weathering such as physical, chemical, and biological weathering. Candidates should also understand weather and climate, including the elements of weather such as temperature, rainfall, pressure, humidity, and wind. Knowledge of weather instruments like the Stevenson screen, rain gauge, barometer, thermometer, and wind vane is essential. Climate classifications, particularly the Köppen Climate Classification, are also important areas of concentration.

3. Human and Regional Geography

Human and Regional Geography examines the relationship between people and their environment. NECO places strong emphasis on regional geography, especially Nigeria and the West African sub-region. Students should understand population and settlement patterns, including factors affecting population distribution, population density, migration, urbanization, and the differences between rural and urban settlements.

Economic activities are another important area, covering agriculture, irrigation farming, plantation farming, mining, fishing, forestry, manufacturing, transportation, and international trade. Candidates should also study the geography of Nigeria, including climate regions, vegetation belts, soil types, drainage systems, major mineral resources, and agricultural zones.

The geography of Africa is equally important. Areas of focus include lumbering in Equatorial Africa, irrigation farming in the Nile and Niger basins, fruit cultivation in the Mediterranean region, and other significant economic activities across the continent.

4. Geographic Information System (GIS)

Geographic Information System (GIS) is a modern aspect of Geography that deals with the collection, storage, analysis, and presentation of geographic data. Students should understand the basic concepts of GIS, its components such as hardware, software, data, people, and procedures, as well as the various sources of geographic information.

Candidates should also learn about the practical applications of GIS in areas such as urban planning, environmental management, transportation, agriculture, disaster management, population studies, and resource planning. Understanding how GIS supports decision-making and problem-solving in the modern world is increasingly important for Geography examinations.
